Socks and Insoles

A major part in the FIT process here at Fleet Feet Sports is the importance of proper socks and insoles (or footbeds).

TOP 5 REASONS TO WEAR NON-COTTON, BREATHABLE SOCKS

  1. At rest, the average foot releases 1/4 cup of sweat each day.
  2. On a five mile run, your feet produce enough sweat to fill an 8oz. glass.
  3. 55% of foot perspiration evaporates through the shoe's upper. The other 45% is absorbed in the sock and footbed!
  4. Two trillion bacteria live on your feet (that's 12% of all bacteria on the human body).
  5. The naked foot temperature is 94 degrees. The non-active foot in a shoe is 105-125 degrees! This temperature increases with activity level.

Moving from a cotton sock to a synthetic, moisture-wicking sock can make all the difference. At Fleet Feet, we carry Balega, Drymax and DeFeet socks. A good sock will alleviate hot spots, prevent blisters, and work to keep your feet dry!

INSOLES ARE TRULY THE DEAL-MAKER

Insoles are like mattresses. A good mattress is made of firm, supportive materials. A bad mattress is soft and is non-supportive. The same holds true with insoles. When you stand on a premium insole, you can feel the firmly supportive shape and materials. It's not soft and mushy...because although soft, non-supportive, insoles feel good when you firts put them in your shoes, in the long run your foot problems don't disappear. A premium insole's firm, contoured shape provides comfort that soft insoles are not able to achieve.

Wearing soft insoles is like running in the soft, dry sand at the beach. Initially it feels good, but you quickly grow tired, waste energy and begin to feel the stress on your knees and back. Wearing premium insoles is like running on firmer, wet sand. It is still comfortable, however your feet feel more balanced and stable, and it's certainly more productive and enjoyable from a performance point of view.

At Fleet Feet we carry Superfeet, Powerstep, Sole, Polysorb and SofSole, each being designed with your specific needs in mind. Let us do what your shoe cannot...give you the direct support that your feet need!
